How Is Alcohol Different From Cannabis?

While both alcohol and cannabis are neurotoxins, alcohol is different in a few significant ways. According to Dr. Ken Finn in an interview with Liz Wheeler (time stamp 10:40):

Alcohol is

  • Water soluble

  • Able to be processed out by the body

  • Metabolized by the liver

  • Excreted in urine

Cannabis

  • Is fat-soluble

  • Resides in fatty tissues. (The biggest fatty tissue in our body is the brain).

  • Accumulates over time in the body / brain in a way that alcohol does not

The fact that alcohol can exit the body while cannabis accumulates in the body, particularly around the brain, has significant implications for health effects of cannabis and exposure over time.
